PIP Insurance Coverage in Utah

PIP is an abbreviation for Personal Injury Protection. Many people will refer to it as “no-fault insurance”, but in Utah, it is mandatory that vehicle insurance policies include this type of coverage.

PIP coverage pays for medical bills, lost wages, and lost household services. In Utah, the PIP covers only $3,000; however, you do have the option to purchase a higher amount.

PIP facts in Utah:

  • Your own auto insurance will pay the initial medical bills, usually up to $3,000.
    • Once the PIP has been exhausted, your health insurance will take over. If you do not have health insurance, then you may be responsible for paying excess bills.
  • Your own PIP coverage will also provide coverage to the other people in your car. The people in the other car are covered by that car’s PIP insurance.
  • In a pedestrian accident, the pedestrian gets PIP coverage from the vehicle that struck him.

In Utah, all vehicle insurance companies are required to pay PIP benefits.
